ABOUT FAIR , ETHICAL & SUSTAINABLE TRADE

What Is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is the driving force of fair Coffee. It advocates for better working conditions and improved terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries. This initiative is essential to the ethical production of coffee.

It supports the development of farming and working communities to have more control over their futures and to protect the environment in which they live and work by receiving:

      • Payment of the Fairtrade minimum price

      • Additional Fairtrade premium for workers to invest in their community

      • Protection of workers' rights

      • Protection of children

      • Preservation of the environment

      • Gender equality

Coffee can only be Fairtrade certified if it is ethically sourced from a small-scale farmer organisation. This gives rural communities the stability of income which enables them to plan for the future and invest in developing their organisation.

Every time you choose a product carrying the Fairtrade mark, you are making the choice to give a fair go to farmers, workers and their communities in some of the world’s poorest communities.

What is the Fairtrade minimum price?

The Fairtrade minimum price ensures that farmers never receive less than the cost it took to produce their crop in a sustainable manner.

It is a vital safety net that protects them from fluctuations in the market and allows them to have an assured and stable income for their future.

Payment of the minimum price is regularly audited and checked by FLO-Cert.

What is the Fairtrade premium?

The Fairtrade premium is an additional sum of money which goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use as they see fit.

Producers determine what is important to them, such as healthcare or education, improving their business or building vital infrastructure for their community, and allocate funds accordingly.

This means that by purchasing fair Coffee, you are not only supporting the producer themselves, but the community as a whole.

What is Sprout Plant a Tree carbon offset?

A portion of orders over $80 goes towards planting a mangrove tree in Madagascar to offset carbon through The Eden Reforestation project.

Why Trees matter?

The trees we plant with Eden Reforestation Projects support wildlife diversity, improve coastlines, provided meaningful wages to indigenous population and grow Mangrove trees which are an incredible carbon sink.

Impact of planting Mangrove trees

Mangroves are unique ecosystems found throughout a wide range in the tropics and occupying the intertidal areas of more than 120 countries. Mangroves, and coastal wetlands in general, are globally important for the many services they provide to humans and the planet. These services include protection against storm surges, sheltering nurseries for fish and other marine life, providing building materials, firewood, and providing critically important services to stabilizing the global climate as an important store of carbon

Mangroves, an incredible carbon sink

With the rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the last century, the need for enduring carbon sinks has grown. The latest models suggest that to remain within “acceptable” global temperature increase, it is no longer enough to simply reduce emissions, and protect existing forests, but rather that we need to rapidly increase the ability to sequester carbon. Globally, mangrove systems are estimated to hold an astounding 20 petagrams of carbon. For a biome representing less than 5% of the world’s terrestrial area, this makes mangroves one of the most important carbon stocks, even more than many rainforests like the Amazon. Equally, as a relatively fast-growing group of species, mangroves sequester carbon at a very fast rate.
